Quad Biking Adventures in Uganda
Quad biking Safari is different from other game safaris. The difference here is that you explore the park or conduct a game drive not in a truck, but on a Quad bike (All-Terrain Vehicle). More still, this is a self-game viewing drive. It is really interesting and can be conducted only in Lake Mburo National Park and Jinja in Uganda.
Lake Mburo National Park is a beautiful area of varied landscapes, alive with interest and colour. Lake Mburo National Park is conveniently located near the Western Uganda Highway, approximately 220km from Kampala (3-4 hours’ drive), Uganda’s capital.
There are many species of animals and birds in Lake Mburo among which include; herds of zebra, impala and eland, groups of waterbuck, buffalo and topi, Giraffes, families of warthogs and baboons, sometimes encountering a solitary oribi or klipspringer, flocks of egrets arrow across the lake, pairs of crested cranes around a mud hole, black-backed vultures in an acacia tree or circling high overhead. Over 300 bird species have been recorded in this park. There are no elephants or lions in this park, making it suitable for this type of safari.
The All-Terrain Vehicles (Quad Bikes) are very easy to ride. Semi-automatic 250cc machines with efficient silencers and very wide, low-pressure tyres for minimal impact on the trails. Learner / practice circuits have been set up beside the site. No previous experience is needed as the guides will train you in the basics and develop your skills along the way.
It is really an interesting activity to have a game drive on all-terrain vehicles while driving yourself. You will view a number of wild animals at close range on a quad bike while meandering effortlessly along trails that wind through acacia forest, glimpses of animals through the trees, opening out into valleys with herds grazing in the open savannah plains.
You are free to stop at any time, and at a few points along the trail, we all stop, switch off the engines, and take in the unblemished sounds of pure African bush. Bottled water is carried by the guides – fruit juice and biscuits are served while overlooking the waterhole.
Each trip starts with signing on and getting kitted out with overalls, a helmet, goggles, a bandana and either gumboots or your own closed footwear. A briefing is always conducted on how to conduct this Safari around the Park. Emphasis is placed on strictly adhering to Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations, in particular, no off-track riding or speeding.
If you came here to plough through the mud and race your friends, you’ve made a mistake. These are game-viewing safaris for small groups who want to get out into the bush and experience the sights, sounds, smells, and feel of Africa without windows or a tin can around them!
The Eland Track Guided Quad Biking Safari: This takes about 2 hours, meandering through the acacia forest of Lake Mburo National Park, with herds of zebra, groups of waterbuck and topi, eland, warthogs and many other animals and birds. The prices quoted for each safari differ and include: training, helmet, goggles, overalls, and refreshments.
There is the Ankole Trail Guided Quad Biking Safari, which takes about 3 hours: a game-viewing drive on the western shores, up to the Kagarami Lookout, then on to the Ankole Cultural Centre, and out through plantations and farms. It offers an opportunity to visit the beautiful, sacred sites of the Ankole Tribe. There is also the Ruroko Track Guided quad biking Safari, which takes about 4 hours for the more adventurous, through open valleys and over difficult sections of the park tracks, stopping off at Ruroko Kopje, finally returning via the Lakeside Track.
