It extends over 250 sq km in the northwest corner of Rwanda, on its border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It includes five of the Virunga Mountains eight dormant volcanoes, the tallest of which rises to nearly 15000ft. Volcanoes National Park has 7 habituated groups of Mt. Gorillas. Over 350 Mountain Gorillas live in PNV. Your trek will be enchanting as you weave through overhanging vines, moss-covered Hagenia trees and giant Lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate. You may spot golden monkeys or see bush duiker and a wide variety of bird life.
SAFARI ITINERARY
Day 1: Kigali - Volcanoes National Park (Parc National Des Volcans)Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be welcomed, greeted and assisted by our driver-guide, who will drive you to Kinigi Park Head Quarters, 96km from Kigali. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla's Nest / Kinigi Guest House.
Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Parc National Des Volcans (Volcanos national Park)
Early morning at sunrise, we make our way to Kinigi Park Head Quarters (30 minutes drive) for a briefing on how to conduct during gorilla tracking. Then trackers lead you into the forested slopes to seek one of the habituated groups of Mountain gorilla. Reaching the gorillas can be quick, or it can take a few hours. In the course of seeking for Gorillas, you will be exposed to excellent birding and primate trekking (like the threatened Golden Monkeys). You will remain close to the beautiful primates for one hour for observation and photography.
In the afternoon, visit the panoramic twin volcanic lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Closer to the gorilla's home, Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are real gems you must not miss. Their deep blue water is surrounded by high hills. From these come immense water falls that decorate volcanoes in a spectacular way. Through splendid excursions in the "land of a thousand hills", you discover unforgettable beauty, sublime colors and a fantastic universe of Lakes Burera and Ruhondo where many merry children burst into laughter. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla's Nest / Kinigi Guest House
Day 3: Day Hike to Mt. Bisoke
Go for Mt. climbing/ hiking on the volcano Mt Bisoke, which is topped by a beautiful crater lake. The hike leads through rain forest inhabited by the endangered mountain gorillas that were the subject of the movie "Gorillas in the Mist" about Dian Fossey. The hike to the Crater Lake (no swimming) takes about 3 hours up and 2 hours down. It is non-technical but can be muddy and slippery, especially on the steeper sections. Long pants are suggested due to the stinging nettles plants that are found along the trail. However, this activity is suitable for those who are reasonably fit. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla's Nest / Kinigi Guest House
Day 4: PNV - Kigali city tour
You will have a Kigali city tour on your final day in Rwanda, where you will visit the Genocide Memorial Museum before you transfer to the airport for your onward international flight.
The city tour includes the old town (Nyamirambo) and Muslim quarter, the new handicraft village and other shops, the Batwa pottery and dance centre and the Gisozi Genocide Memorial. The memorial is very moving the tour takes a couple of hours - and will be of interest to anyone who has spent some time in this enchanting country.
